While some felt that Williams took a subtle dig at Drake, with whom she reportedly dated back in 2011, others were left in awe of her surprise performance. Delivering a stunning reaction, she said, “Ohh my god, I died. All of a sudden I see, that’s Serena. I am loving Kendrick like it was such an interface and very obvious middle finger to certain people in America. She looks great. I was like, girl, you win. It was pretty awesome.”

Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time that fans saw Williams perform the Crip Walk. How can we forget Serena Williams‘ 2012 Olympic gold move? After her Super Bowl cameo, she explained how that performance became a reason for her surprise appearance.

Williams revealed, “When Kendrick Lamar and team called and was like, ‘We’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your Crip Walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal.’ I’m like Super Bowl? Are you serious? When in the world would I ever be able to dance at a Super Bowl? (Never) let’s do it!”

Meanwhile, Stubbs wasn’t the only one who praised Williams‘ cameo at the Super Bowl. Even the American legend’s husband, Alexis Ohanian was in awe of Williams’ performance.

Back in 2012, when Williams performed the Crip Walk for the first time at the London Olympics, she was heavily criticized for not respecting the global sporting event after winning a gold medal there as the dance glorified gang culture. As a result, her husband and Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian took a subtle dig at the critics as Williams’ performance was all over social media.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, Ohanian wrote, “Some of y’all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago and it shows. This is bigger than the music.” Further, Williams also revealed that she knew that her Olympics performance back in 2012 would pay off one day as she received an invitation from Lamar to perform crip-walking during the Super Bowl.
