How did Maria Sharapova make Supergoop a successful brand?

The five-time Grand Slam champion is one of the most celebrated and loved tennis players of all time. Along with her talent, her beauty made her the star of the show. However, what others did not know was also the fact that she was conscious of her business choices as well.

In an interview with Brand Innovators, she detailed how her investing journey began. The trend of athletes turning into part-brand owners from brand ambassadors was prevalent at that point. However, Sharapova did not want to rush into it. Hence, she detailed how she approached her favorite skincare brand, Supergoop.

After knowing how the brand and team worked for months, she finally decided to take a step. She stated, “I said here’s my money. I want ownership in what you’re building. And I want to use my platform and my brand to help you grow.” Her closed personality helped her in making this informed choice. She stated, “I’m very selective in the rooms that I go into.”

The brand became one of the most loved sunscreen brands of all time. Last year, Supergoop was acquired by Blackstone for $750 million. The investment Sharapova made eleven years ago proved fruitful, as the valuation of the brand shows the growth it had achieved.

How did Sharapova’s personality help her in making the right business choices? 

Sharapova was always seen as very reserved and not very sociable. However, she was concentrating on making a life of her own both on and off the court, which eventually paved a great career path for her.
