If you have been a WWE fan for a decade or so, The Bloodline story must feel a bit out of character at times. No, there’s nothing wrong with the storyline. But the time the WWE has invested in Roman Reigns’ family drama is unprecedented. While the WWE is infamous for chopping and changing storylines at the drop of a hat, content like The Bloodline storyline has been an exception to that rule. Having said that, much before the Reigns and his cousins played their part in the riveting storyline, the WWE gave it a shot with a few other wrestlers.
One among them, Summer Rae, recently spoke about her memorable storyline from 2015. The former WWE superstar recalled how Vince McMahon was happy with an unexpected response from the crowd.

During the course of its run, it had Summer Rae and Rusev getting romantically involved. So much so, that Rae proposed to The Bulgarian Brute. While he accepted, the 37-year-old set a condition, that he had to win the gold first.
However, on the October 12, 2015, episode of WWE RAW, the couple split, and the story ended abruptly. The crowd saw an angry Summer Rae confronting Rusev and showing him pictures of a TMZ report about him and Lana getting engaged. She slapped him but had surprising reactions from the crowd.
“I didn’t know how the crowd would react. And the interesting thing is the crowd reacted on things I didn’t think they’d pop on,” she said on the ‘Insight with Chris Van Vliet’ podcast. The 39-year-old said that the WWE offered her to write her own promo, which she did with former WWE employee Jimmy Jacobs.
“I was proud of it, because I wrote it. Jimmy Jacobs was so happy… Like Vince was happy and everyone was happy,” she said.
But why did the WWE got rid of the storyline?
Rae said it was the TMZ article that doomed the product she and the others had invested in for months. Upon finding out the report, several WWE members, including McMahon, was unhappy.

They deemed that it hampered the story they were trying to tell, as it showed Lana getting ignored and dumped by Rusev onscreen and getting engaged in real life.
So, in a few hours’ notice, the storyline was decimated. And while McMahon was happy, it left a bad taste in many fans’ mouths. But over the years, the promotion seemed to have learnt from their mistakes. Which has resulted in a longer rope for several storylines and also a revival of old ones- like in the case of Seth Rollins’ feud with Finn Balor.
