During a virtual signing with Signed By Superstars, Matt Riddle shared his belief that he was informed about winning the 2022 Men’s Royal Rumble Match. But, Brock Lesnar reportedly changed the match finish independently. According to Wrestling Observer Radio‘s Dave Meltzer, the narrative surrounding Riddle’s Royal Rumble victory differs.

Meltzer clarified that while Riddle was among the top considerations, it was not a definitive plan. He said, “He was involved in that one Rumble, from what I was told…If you think about when it was and everything like that and how he was being pushed, and that the winner of the [Royal] Rumble main events WrestleMania, he was never being pushed at that level.” WWE later informs Meltzer that they never seriously considered Riddle as a potential Royal Rumble winner at any point.

Meltzer ended by saying, “It’s not like they couldn’t have done it, but they weren’t going to do it then. And I know people there that were, top people there that were very, very high on him. But, he kept getting the bad pub. A lot of people didn’t really want to see him succeed because he was not very judicious.” For the Royal Rumble, Meltzer debunked the idea that Riddle was intended to win. But he did argue that WWE did not seriously consider Riddle for such a role.

Despite some internal support, Riddle’s inconsistent reputation and public image seemed to hinder his chances. The question now arises: What role did Lesnar play in Riddle losing the Royal Rumble, as claimed by Riddle?

In a twist at the 2022 Men’s Royal Rumble, Brock Lesnar, entering as the surprise #30 entrant, dominated to secure a WWE World Championship match at WrestleMania 38. This victory marked Lesnar’s second Royal Rumble win, the first being in 2003.

Former WWE Superstar Matt Riddle, however, claimed in a recent virtual signing with “Signed By Superstars” that he was initially slated to win the Royal Rumble. According to Riddle, Lesnar, having entered late, decided to alter the script and insisted on winning the match.

He said, “Bobby Lashley beat Brock Lesnar because somebody came in and hit him with the belt or what have you. Then Brock came in and didn’t want to do business with everybody. He said he was winning [the Rumble match], and then he won. None of the producers, nobody stood up to him and they let him do it. I didn’t either.” Conflicting reports suggest Riddle was considered the frontrunner until a late change, with Randy Orton also pitched as a potential winner.
