Jinder Mahal is gearing up for a championship match against Seth Rollins at Monday Night Raw next week. He returned from an 8-month-long hiatus and challenged the World Heavyweight Champion on the Flagship show this week.

If ‘The Modern Day Maharaja’ wins his championship match next week, it will be his first title in a long while. Interestingly, he didn’t have any championship reigns since 2017 except for the time he captured the 24/7 championship in June 2019. That said, let’s explore some possible reasons why WWE kept him off the title picture until now.

WWE originally planned ‘The Modern Day Maharaja’ to defend his title against Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series 2017. But ‘The Beast Incarnate’ refused to work with him for some unknown reasons. Therefore, the promotion made him drop his belt to Styles, who later faced Lesnar at the PPV.

2. Lack of captivating storyline

After WWE removed Mahal from the title picture, his momentum decreased to a level where he couldn’t engage the viewers anymore. The Stamford-based promotion pitched him against multiple superstars, but fans seemed to have lost interest in him.

3. WWE’s decision to cast the spotlight on other stars

Things started to get worse as WWE began casting the spotlight on other superstars. As Mahal was no longer attracting the audience, WWE moved to the next person who was drawing more attention from the WWE Universe. One thing led to another and, once again, the former WWE Champion was pushed to the back of the line.

All these factors led to ‘The Modern Day Maharaja’ not having multiple title reigns in WWE after 2017. A lot happened in Mahal’s WWE career since the… switching brands, and knee surgery, all of which accounted for his recession in WWE. But WWE is trying to push him to the limelight again.
