The Undertaker Reveals the Priceless Advice Vince McMahon Gave Him to be Successful in WWE

The pro-wrestling industry has been around for almost a century now. During this time, there have been umpteen wrestlers who had certain gimmicks in their wrestling promotions. However, the character of The Undertaker is the one that stands out from the rich history of this industry.

However, for Mark Calaway (Undertaker’s real name) not everything was easy. When he started his career in the late 80s and the early 90s, he had a tough time figuring out his character in the pro-wrestling industry.

Having a gimmick back in those days was a wee bit important. Back in the late 90s, when ‘Taker was wrestling in WCW, he had a ring name called Mean Mark, who would squash his opponents in quick fashion.

The former WWE champion sat down with UFC and WWE megastar Ronda Rousey and confessed how Vince McMahon gave him advice about how he should carry himself.

The Undertaker started that in this wrestling one has to introspect and pay attention to his character/gimmick. He also stated that the person should create a persona that the audience cares about.

However, Vince took a quick test of the young Mark Calaway. The Undertaker confessed that one day McMahon called his phone and straight away asked, “Is this The Undertaker?”.

“To be successful, you have to identify a little bit. You have to have a character that people care about. One day the phone rings, I answer the phone and I get ‘Is this The Undertaker?’, and I know that was Vince’s [Vince McMahon] voice. And I’m like, ‘Yes sir, this is The Undertaker'”

After this incident, the WWE chairman called ‘Taker in his office and pitched his idea of ‘The Undertaker’, Mark Calaway happily accepted the character, and hence the greatest wrestling gimmick was born.

For years to come, ‘Taker never broke kayfabe, he boarded flights dressed in his black leather jacket so that the normal crowd could never know who is the man behind this demonic character.

Mark Calaway entertained the wrestling fans for over three decades and finally hung his wrestling boots after his last match against AJ Styles at WrestleMania 37.
