The WWE and the WWE Universe are gearing up for Crown Jewel 2023. The massive Saudi Arabia spectacle will feature a ton of titles on the line and some action-packed drama. With Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, John Cena, and many more, this is going to be an eventful PLE. This does beg the question, why is the WWE paying so much attention to Crown Jewel when Saudi Arabia isn’t even their biggest market?

Crown Jewel is part of the WWE and Saudi Arabia’s multi-year deal, ensuring two shows annually in the region.

Recently, Saudi Arabia hosted a blockbuster boxing bout between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou. As the event was just days away from Crown Jewel, McMahon and other WWE personnel were present. During an interview, McMahon was quoted calling Saudi Arabia the ‘new home’ for the WWE.

However, many fans have pointed out that Saudi Arabia isn’t even the WWE’s biggest market. So, why does the WWE go above and beyond for it? The simple answer is money talks, and the WWE is paid handsomely for the event. According to the deal, the WWE makes $50 million for each Crown Jewel PLE. Comparing it to WrestleMania 32, which had the highest recorded attendance of 80,709, made only $17.2 million.

The Saudi Arabia deal greatly benefits the company and Mr. McMahon. Not only has it made the WWE more money than all their WrestleMania combined, but it helps expand the audience. A report recently suggested that the WWE made $500 million with Crown Jewel in 2023 since 2018. This is a massive payday for the authority despite the low attendance numbers.

Despite the strict rules the WWE has to follow while operating in Saudi Arabia, the revenue generated eclipses anything the WWE has seen before. Furthermore, there has been fan backlash towards the company for partnering with the Saudi government that fell on deaf ears. Many have claimed the orthodox nature of the people is what is keeping it from becoming the WWE’s biggest market. Along with this, the controversy around the PLE does not help.

The controversy surrounding Crown Jewel PLEs

The biggest controversy around Crown Jewel has been the treatment of the women’s division. While performing in a traditional region, the first Crown Jewel didn’t have a single women’s match. Triple H said, “I understand people are questioning it, but every culture is different and just because you don’t agree with a certain aspect of it, you can’t dictate to a country about how they handle things.

This enraged fans even more as the WWE was siding with their new Saudi partners. However, in 2019, Natalya and Lacey Evans were the first women to participate in the PLE. They had to cover themselves from neck to toe and follow the strict instructions provided. The 2023 Crown Jewel will feature a fatal-five-way women’s title match but with the same rules.
