Mark Calway, aka The Undertaker, took his rightful place amongst the immortal earlier this month. The Undertaker became a WWE Hall of Famer when he was inducted into the 2022 class of the WWE Hall of Fame for giving 30 years of memories to the company and the fans. In his three long decade career, fans will never forget The Undertaker’s rivalry with Mick Foley, aka Mankind.

‘The Hardcore Legend’ Mick Foley wrestled The Undertaker in an iconic Hell in a Cell match at King of the Ring 1998. This match was a life-changing moment for Mankind’s wrestling career.

Even though we have Mankind in insane steel cages, tables, and ladders matches, Mick Foley was involved in an infamous match wherein he lost his ear.

Why did Mick Foley chose matches of The Undertaker over Big Van Vader?

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley recently got himself a spine adjustment, and Dr. Beau Hightower had exciting questions to ask him. Foley was asked to name a few of his favorite matches of all time in wrestling. Mankind recollected his matches against Big Van Vader and revealed that his match against Vader was the most painful one.

“The only reason I don’t put Vader on my list of favorites is because they were great matches, but they weren’t really fun,” Foley stated.

Back in 1994, Mick Foley as Cactus Jack battled the late Big Van Vader during the WCW’s European tour. While performing a routine move, Cactus Jack caught himself in between the ropes. But when the referee got Foley out of the ropes, he lost his ear. During the match, Big Van Vader actually grabbed and ripped off Foley’s right ear.

This was the most disturbing sight for wrestling fans back in the 90s because it involved a horrific display of wrestling. Even though this match went down in the infamy of professional wrestling, Mankind went through excruciating pain.

The iconic rivalry between Mankind and The Phenom!

The Hardcore Legend made his way into Vince McMahon’s WWE in 1996 as Mankind. Soon Foley started his feud against The Undertaker. It all came down to the ultimate battle between The Undertaker and Mankind at the King of the Ring in 1998.

This Hell in a Cell match changed the complexion of both Mankind and Taker’s career. However, Foley lived through sports entertainment’s most shocking moment. It was when The Undertaker threw him from the top of the steel cage in the middle of the ring.

Mick Foley added, “Whereas The Rock was always fun and Steve Austin was always fun. And Triple H was always fun. The Undertaker was always fun, always a great time.”

According to the Hardcore Legend, the Hell in a Cell match against The Phenom gave his career a new life. Mick Foley has already stated that there’s no shame in losing to The Undertaker. The Deadman and Mankind, before their ultimate battle at King of the Ring, were involved in a brutal feud.

Taker and Foley went head to head in a Boiler Room Brawl match and even in a Buried Alive match. These matches had the intensity of third-degree burns and bruises, but Foley had fun being a part of such matches against Taker.

WWE Hall of Famer, in the same interview, mentioned that his matches against Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H were also fun. But a match in which Foley lost his ear at the hands of Big Van Vader was rough for him.
