Vince McMahon will go down in history, as perhaps, one of the greatest revolutionaries in the world. Why? Turning a regional promotion into a global juggernaut, that’s why. McMahon did that with his incredible geniuses, creative insight, and hard work. His father, Vince McMahon Sr. started the momentum, and McMahon Jr. took it to the next level.

But do you remember one of the absolute masterstrokes by Vince in expanding globally? A WWE legend recently recalled it, highlighting The Boss’s plan and also his perseverance at the same time facing multiple rejections.

Vince McMahon wanted to go beyond the days of regional wrestling and present more extravagant shows with larger-than-life personas like Hulk Hogan, Bruno Sammartino, Macho Man, and Roddy Piper which captivated the audience. They were slowly building momentum, but McMahon probably wanted a huge impact. Therefore, he dug deep and carved out a highly credible mainstream plan.

The current WWE Executive Chairman began pulling celebrities from various other fields to add more star power to his product. He even reached out to many regional promoters to join hands in his initiative. However, most of them rejected the offer, as disclosed by WWE Hall of Famer, Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase. The former WWE champion spoke about this during the latest edition of his podcast, Everybody’s Got A Pod.

DiBiase said: “Regional wrestling … territory wrestling … it ended when Vince made this move …. you know and … as the story goes … when he began this, he went around to all the promoters, all the head guys of those territories … every territory in the country and he told em … this is what I am about to do and I am here to see if want you to join … if you want to be a part of what I am about to do … and all those other promoters … there were a couple … but most of them said no because they wanted to do their own thing.”

He concluded, “I don’t think that they believed that Vince McMahon … basically was capable of taking over the wrestling and he did.”

While McMahon showed his dominance, it can arguably be said that those promoters surely would have regretted their decision of saying no to him.

Which Celebrities did Vince McMahon bring in?

As Dibiase rightly pointed out, Vince McMahon was looking to build his presence in the business in the biggest possible way by bringing in various celebrities. The first-ever edition of his now-annual extravaganza, WrestleMania saw stars like Mr. T, Cyndi Lauper, and boxing legend, Muhammad Ali.

As the years progressed, celebrities became a huge attraction for WWE to gain popularity. The company saw the likes of Mike Tyson, Pete Rose, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Kid Rock. Moreover, even in the modern era, WWE is continuing to grow the product with stars like Logan Paul and Bad Bunny.

So, it can be said in all fairness, that it was a genius move by Vince McMahon. Furthermore, it was like a home-cooked recipe passed down to generations to make television programming even better, continuing to be used even when McMahon is not the sole owner of WWE anymore.
