While Djokovic and Nadal are in their mid 30’s, Federer has entered his 40s. Looking at the tour, Nadal and Djokovic may continue their dominance in the game. However, considering Federer’s age, Alexander Zverev has his doubts if Federer will ever win a slam again.

Interacting with the media post his quarterfinal win at the 2022 French Open, Zverev said, “…We still have the best players in the world playing. Novak, Rafa…and Roger is coming back. I’m not sure if at the age of 41 he is going to win a grand slam again. But obviously, you have to mention him.”

What is the challenge for Roger Federer?

For years, the sport of tennis has seen a number of players come and go. However, none have been able to dominate the ‘BIG 3’ of the game in recent years. After much wait, the ongoing generation in men’s tennis has come close to the ‘BIG 3’. Players such as Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitisipas, Daniil Medvedev, and Dominic Thiem.

Looking at the stats, this generation of players has been a tough competition for the BIG 3. Especially Roger Federer, who has been outplayed by these players on a number of occasions. Taking up this point, Zverev further elaborated, “…I think our generation is very strong as well. We have Tsitsipas. We have Medvedev, who is a US Open champion. Me, I have won big events, like the Olympics as well.”

While the current generation of players has come close to the BIG 3, another threat that is arising for them is the upcoming generation. Players like Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger Aliassime are emerging as tough competition.
