It’s been barely a month since he last fought, and already Shakur Stevenson is getting feelers for the next bout. But the shouts are not coming from the big desks. Jamaine Ortiz, a Lightweight contender from Worcester, seems confident that he can take on Stevenson. The latter recently fought a non-title bout against Shuichiro Yoshino on April 8, after three of the divisional fighters, Isaac Cruz, William Zepeda, and George Kambosos Jr., reportedly refused to face him.

Ortiz had a good run last year. He won the first two bouts against Nahir Albright and Jamel Herring. But for the third one, he had to face the indomitable Vasiliy Lomachenko. Ortiz lost the fight that took place on October 29 unanimously. According to an article in BadLeftHook, he would be fighting in one of the undercards of the welterweight title bout between Josh Taylor and Teofimo Lopez on June 10.

According to an article on BoxingScene, Ortiz told YSM Media, “I’m [definitely] pressing for it. “I want the fight.” And pat came Shakur Staveneson’s reply when the news appeared on BoxingScene’s Twitter handle, “Cmon s***a come [to] see what this heat feel[s] like.” Ortiz responded that he’s going to “clear the smoke” with Stevenson. ‘Fearless’ shot back saying, “Shut up, u ain’t gone do s**t.

Exercise caution, Shakur Stevenson’s fans tell

One user believes that since both these fighters mean business, their clash would be an ‘ultimate summer fight’.

The following user, however, seems unhappy that Stevenson would take on a guy who Vasiliy Lomachenko has already defeated. Instead, he should fight either Frank Martin or wait for the results of the Haney – Lomachenko match and fight the winner.

Another user also seems to think along similar lines. However, he also opines that Frank Martin would have been a good option.

One user mentioned that Ortiz still can’t get over losing to Lomachenko. He seems to think Stevenson is just a small-time Featherweight, disregarding his experience and physical condition. He further stated that Ortiz will only hurt himself if he chooses to fight Stevenson.

A user named Roger is confident that Ortiz would barely hurt Stevenson. He stated that the latter would simply ‘outbox,’ and ‘outclass’ him in the ring.

Shakur was the unified Super Featherweight champion when he took on Robson Conceicao on September 23. Even though he won, he had to part with his titles, as he missed weight by 1.6 lbs. during the weigh-ins. Hence he decided to move to the subsequent weight division at 135 lbs. The Lightweight is teeming with notable names, such as Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko, and Gervonta Davis. It remains to be seen what the young and promising boxer’s next move will be.
