Gennady Golovkin was set to take on Ryota Murata on December 29 in Japan. Unfortunately for boxing fans and for the middleweight boxers, that fight is off as GGG will not be able to make it to Japan owing to fresh restrictions in the wake of the new COVID-19 variant.

Per ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, “Sources: GGG-Ryota Murata is postponed due to new COVID restrictions in Japan that prohibits foreign visitors in the wake of the omicron variant. The middleweight title unification was set for Dec. 29 in Saitama on DAZN. Plan is for bout to be rescheduled in Japan next year.”

Gennady Golovkin is currently in Florida training for the fight. Before the fight, Golovkin spoke about how excited he was to compete in Japan. “I am really excited to be bringing the Big Drama Show to Japan, a country where boxing is very popular,” Triple G said. “Ryota Murata has been an outstanding champion.”

Now he will have to wait a few more months to fight for the belt.

Gennady Golovkin turns 40 next month, and for a decade, he has terrorized the middleweight divisions. As he nears the end of his career, there’s no saying when the Kazakh native may decide to hang up the gloves. Will the postponement of this fight lead him to make such a decision? We hope not.

Eddie Hearn is looking past a trilogy fight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed his future plans for Gennady Golovkin. Canelo Alvarez got a lot of attention at the last WBC convention when his trainer Eddy Reynoso asked the WBC to sanction a fight between Alvarez and the WBC Cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu.

Now all the people waiting for their title shot against Canelo have to bide their time. Following Canelo’s decision, Hearn has decided that the only option is to further unify the titles for GGG.

“After the Murata fight, if Gennadiy wins and then doesn’t get the third Canelo fight, the next step is to further unify,” Hearn told BoxingScene.com. “If you’re Gennadiy, that means you only got Charlo and Demetrius.”
