Canelo Alvarez will make his return to the squared circle in September of this year. The undisputed super-middleweight champion will face Jermell Charlo for his first fight after signing with ‘PBC’. Charlo, the undisputed light middleweight champion, will move up in the weight division to compete for the super middleweight titles.
A bout against ‘Saul’ is not only lucrative but also an opportunity to be an undisputed champion of two weight divisions. However, the betting odds are stacked against him. That being said, Claressa Shields finds herself supporting Charlo in his upcoming quest. Apart from that, the former female boxing champion predicts that Charlo would be the victor in the contest.

Claressa Shields fancies Jermell Charlo to cause an upset in his bout against Canelo Alvarez
Boxing is an unpredictable sport, and upsets are not seldom. Counting Charlo out may not be wise, or at the least, that’s what Shields would suggest. In an interview with Fight Hype, Shields weighed in on this match-up. According to her, Alvarez has been defeated in contests, unlike Charlo.
Based on this premise, she asserts, “He [Charlo] might not have to cut as much, he’ll be stronger. Canelo is the guy to beat but we have seen that he is not unbeatable. He lost to Floyd and he lost to Bivol. So, Jermell is very confident fighter and very determined and he hates losing.”
Contrary to the opinion of a majority of the fans, Shields thinks Alvarez won’t be able to “break” Charlo. She added, “For Canelo to win he would have to break Jermell and I don’t think Jermell can be broken.”
Safe to say that Shields has a definite answer. However, this has not been the only instance that Shields has spoken about this matchup.
Claressa Shields dislikes Jermell Charlo facing Canelo Alvarez for this reason
Size plays a pivotal factor in boxing bouts. And for that reason, weight classes exist. However, certain courageous fighters have the confidence in their skill set to compete against heavier opponents. Safe to say that Charlo is one of them as he gears on to not only face a bigger man but the best at that division. But Shields finds the weight discrepancy to be concerning.
In a tweet, she stated, “I don’t like the match up, because size matters! But shit skills, grit, that unwilling to lose Mindset matter too! So If I can conquer a giant so can.”

In all fairness, Alvarez in the past also moved up in weight division. However, it is intriguing that Shields considers the match-up to be unfair, however, she backs Charlo to win the fight against the reigning undisputed super-middleweight champion.
