‘I Couldn’t Wait to Do That to Somebody’: Mike Tyson Recounts ‘The Best’ Michael Jackson Story

Michael Jackson captured magic with his artistry and made fans all over the globe. His dance moves, his raging, crying, and powerful voice, and those dreamy melodies that ran through the veins of his luminous and immortal strings. Jackson gave us one hit after another. And to contemplate a particular hit is to think about a specific time when MJ introduced a new sound to the industry of entertainment and music. Whether you think about Human Nature, Bad, Stranger in Moscow, or the never fading Billie Jean. There was always an element of ‘something new’ MJ had carved on.

In the latest episode of HotBoxin’ with Mike Tyson, the champ narrated a new and ‘the best’ Michael Jackson story. A story about the time when he had just knocked out Michael Spinks and met the ‘King of Pop’ with promoter Don King. Tyson was in Cleaveland and had come to see the show. When ‘MJ’ spotted Don King, he greeted the same with the peace sign. Seeing this, Tyson made a peace sign himself and waved at Michael. However, as soon as Jackson saw Mike, he lowered his hands.

Tyson said, “Listen, let me tell you my Michael Jackson story. The best one ever. This is the best one ever. I’m in Cleaveland, Ohio, I’m coming to see the show. I’m with Don King. He [Michael Jackson] goes like this [makes the peace sign] to Don King. So I go like this back [makes the peace sign]. Once I do it, he [Michael Jackson] sees me, he puts his hand down. That’s just it.”

After this incident, Tyson went to the back and said hi to the performer, Mike. Here’s how everyone reacted as they found ‘Kid Dynamite.’

Seeing Mike Tyson backstage, everyone took photos. The drummer offered him his sticks. “So, I went to the back. He said ‘hi’ talking to Don. Some of the artists, his drummer, I think it might have been, gave me the sticks, the girls singing, toys. Everybody is taking pictures with me and Michael is right over there with an open door, waiting for someone to pick him up. He’s just over there by himself.”

Observing Michael Jackson stand all alone, Tyson thought about going up to him. However, as soon as Tyson confronted the other Mike, he asked Michael Jackson where he was from and why he had looked so familiar to him.

Tyson asked the King of Pop why he had looked familiar to him

Tyson said, “Let me just go over there and say ‘hi’ to Mike. I [had] just knocked out Michael Spinks [in] the biggest fight in the world. Everybody’s talking about it, right? I go over to Michael Jackson, I say, ‘Excuse me, Mike, where do I know you from?’ You look familiar. Where do I know you from?”

To sum it up, Mike Tyson literally asked one of the greatest entertainers of all time how he looked so familiar to him. The ‘King of Pop’ wasn’t so bothered. In fact, Michael Jackson replied with respect and he replied politely.

To quote Tyson, Jackson said,” Jacksonville, a pleasure to meet you.” Tyson found the whole incident ‘fly’. On the podcast, he said, “I couldn’t wait to do that to somebody.”
