Over a month ago, Terence Crawford made history by becoming the first-ever dual-weight undisputed world champion. Not only that, he defeated his rival; Errol Spence Jr. in stunning fashion. He knocked him down in the second round and the seventh before he got the stoppage in the ninth. His recent win solidifies his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of his generation.
Another great boxer of his generation is Canelo Alvarez. However, a fight between the two was never seriously considered by either of them given their weight disparity. However, in a recent turn of events, ‘Bud,’ has shown his interest to challenge Alvarez in the super-middleweight division. Moreover, a substantial section of the boxing world thinks that Crawford is biting more than he can chew to face Alvarez, including a former boxing world champion.

Which former champion opposes Crawford vs. Alvarez?
Crawford may want to fight, ‘Saul,’ but Paulie Malignaggi does not foresee it taking place. The former two-weight world champion retired in the year 2017 but is associated with the sport as a commentator and analyst. In an interview with FightHubtv, amongst other things, the retired boxer dwells into a potential matchup between Crawford and Alvarez. In his opinion, the weight disparity is too significant for the bout to come to fruition. At the same time, he acknowledges he was incorrect with his predictions in the past and this instance may end up being one.
In the interview, he stated, “I mean it’s the talking point. I don’t know if that would really happen. I mean we have seen some strange things in boxing don’t get me wrong, especially in recent years. So I was say never say never but idk how seriously that’s going to be taken. I think when you are at a level where you come from a big win like Crawford just did, anything you say, reverberates.”
He adds, “I think he’s too small. But then again I thought he was too small for Spence so what do I know? I don’t know I think that’s a lot of weight class jumping.” Although he does not foresee the bout taking place, he does not disregard the possibility of it. Many share the same opinion as him but let’s take a look at what Crawford thinks he should face Alvarez.
Terence Crawford makes a case for his fight against Canelo Alvarez
Crawford acknowledged the weight disparity and advanced a solution. In an interview, he asserted that the two can meet in a middle ground for it to become a level playing field. He stated, “We can do something at a catchweight,” he added, “Probably, 160 or something, 158. Yeah, 158, 160, that would be cool.”
