Finally, as it turned out, Devin Haney made an offer that Shakur Stevenson refused to oblige. Fresh out of his second title defense, the undisputed Lightweight champion reached out to ‘Sugar,’ who moved up a division this year. But when the details of the split came out, it left quite a few fans, as well as some from the boxing fraternity, bewildered. Among them was Floyd Mayweather Jr., who reportedly believes the terms were partisan. Anticipatedly, Haney’s father finally jumped in defense of his son and railed at the richest boxer in the world.
Done with Vasiliy Lomachenko‘s challenge, albeit controversially, Devin Haney and Stevenson went after each other. Fans might still remember ‘The Dream’ staring down Stevenson with his “I’am number one” taunt. Haney reportedly made an offer with a 75/25 purse split in his favor. Understandably, Stevenson found his share way too low for acceptance and turned it down.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Bill Haney: The legend’s sense of equity to fatherly love
Floyd Mayweather Jr. spoke on the issue during a recent interview with Fight Hype‘s Ben Thompson. He took up the instance when Devin Haney had to go to Australia to become the undisputed champion. He mentioned that Shakur Stevenson could have been treated with a bit more fairness, just like Haney in the past should have been treated by his promoters when he was asked to travel Down Under. ‘Money’ said, “I’m I don’t. I can’t even say if it should be a 50-50 or 60-40; that’s not my place but it, but Shakur should be treated [fairly], just like Devin Haney should have got treated fair when he went over to Australia the first time.”
A response from the opposite corner was on the expected lines. Incensed, Devin Haney’s father, Bill Haney, thanking Fight Hype’s Ben Thompson, let loose a barrage of broadsides on the undefeated former champion. He said, “Listen, uh, shout out to, uh, Ben Thompson at Fight Hype and shout out to Floyd for being the worstest kind of ni**a in the world today and saying the worstest sh*t in the world that any black man could say to another guy!”
The response will surely draw in a whole load of reactions from multiple corners.

‘Sugar’ on the quest for glory
On Shakur Stevenson, after he missed the weight during the Robson Conceicao bout last year, the Olympic silver medalist had to vacate his Super Featherweight titles. Subsequently, he moved to the Lightweight with his first fight against Shuichiro Yoshino in April of this year. The sixth-round knockout win convinced everyone that the Newark-born Southpaw is here to stay.
With Haney reportedly looking for a bout with Regis Prograis in the Light Welterweight division, his WBC title in the 135 pounds has gone vacant. As the news filters in, Stevenson might get an opportunity to become a three-division champion. He and Frank Martin have been instructed to fight for the vacant Lightweight belt. Per available reports, Haney remains a ‘champion in recess’ for the 135-pound division.
