It’s been three days since the world greeted the first male undisputed champion in two divisions. It may take a while for the excitement and euphoria over one of the defining moments of modern boxing to simmer down. But talks of a rematch between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. seem to be making an appearance. However, questions about needing a second bout have popped up across several corners. Terence Crawford’s victory had been so emphatic. The issue even appears to have stirred a minor storm down under. Former unified champion George Kambosos Jr. snapped back at a seemingly innocuous suggestion questioning a few rematches’ relevancy.

Two days ago, an article about Terence Crawford’s possible opponents appeared in The Sporting News UK. Later, the author of the article, Tom Gray, tweeted yesterday that many a time, the second installment in a series ends disastrously. He listed some of the sequels to blockbuster hits such as ‘The Exorcist,’ ‘Speed,’ and ‘Grease’ that eventually bombed at the box office.

Additionally, he cited the second Devin Haney and George Kambosos Jr. rematch. He said, “When part one tells you everything you need to know, it makes sense to move on to other business.” The critique piqued the interest of the former unified champion George Kambosos Jr. He replied that, despite the lack of need, he went after the boxer, whom most of the fighters avoided. So it appeared routine when an opportunity was at hand to reclaim the lost belts and earn a grand payday.

Additionally, he reminded the reporter to get his act together. After two consecutive losses last year, Kambosos Jr. returned last month to grab the IBO Lightweight from Briton Maxi Hughes. The result shocked everyone, as the Australian was declared the winner by a majority decision. Many who saw the match felt that Hughes fought well enough to retain his title.

A tale of two losses and cloned outcomes

Later in 2021, a relatively unknown boxer, George Kambosos Jr., marked his arrival on the world stage with a victory over Teofimo Lopez, the unified Lightweight champion. But on the path to the undisputed championship stood Devin Haney, who held the WBC belt. A momentous clash was bound to happen. The two met in Melbourne, Australia’s Docklands Stadium, on June 5 last year. ‘The Dream’ gave an excellent account of himself to secure a unanimous victory.

But that only bolstered Kambosos Jr.’s desire to redeem himself from the shame incurred in front of the home crowd. As a result, he exercised his right to call up a rematch. The duo met again at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on October 16. Unfortunately for ‘Ferocious,’ the outcome remained the same: Haney handed over a second consecutive defeat. Many questioned the necessity of the October rematch.
