Terence Crawford has not seen action in the ring for a while now. Will this inactivity leave a dent in his legacy? Promoter, Oscar De La Hoya drew from his experience to comment on this front.
In July last year, ‘Bud’ fought against Errol Spence Jr. for the undisputed title of the welterweight class. His opponent, ‘The Truth’ invoked the rematch clause embedded in their contract after a devastating loss. However, he let the rematch period elapse after choosing to undergo eye surgery. While the on-and-off continued, Bud remained out of the ring, keeping fans in anticipation of his next opponent and fight. While a potential fight for the 2x undisputed champion has emerged, the ‘Golden Boy’ had some poignant suggestions to make to the fighter.

The interviewers from Little Giant Boxing sought the promoter’s response on Bud’s lack of activity in the sport. Oscar De La Hoya, in his reply, extended his advice beyond Bud to other fighters in the sport. He remarked, “If any fighter’s listening, you gotta stay active. Like Vergil wants to fight, Virgil’s gotta fight four times this year. Because he wants to. So, as a promoter, you gotta facilitate that.”
Vergil Ortiz Jr., the WBO International welterweight champion, and the promoter’s marquee fighter last fought in January against Fredrick Lawson, and is slated to fight three more times this year. The head of Golden Boy Promotions further explained that as a promoter, he and others like him prefer backing fighters like Ortiz Jr. who are keen to fight actively in their career. “So a fighter like Crawford who’s a beast, obviously, you cannot stay idle,” he advised.

De La Hoya added, “Don’t think about I gotta get the biggest purse and you know the biggest offer. Think about your legacy because once you think about legacy and achieve legacy the money comes. Don’t think about the money and then legacy, think about legacy and then the money.”
However, it seems like the wait is soon to be over. Reports suggest that the fighter is planning his next stint in the super welterweight class.
