Surely, it sounds too good to be true. But the reality, as it stands, is that even with a few setbacks, the gaming market is only getting bigger and better. Still, such a huge amount of investment coming from Disney poses a few questions. Who is the mastermind behind the idea? Is this a smart move? And what prompted such a move? 

Disneyâ€s ‘Epic†entry into the gaming front 

It all started the day Bob Iger returned to the helm as the CEO of Disney back in 2022. He incubated in his mind the idea of capitalizing on the gaming market. Thus, immediately after taking up responsibilities, Iger met with a couple of higher ups of the company to discuss with them his vision, backed by statistics and demographics. Thankfully, he was able to convince the company about the boost the gaming market is generating at the moment. 

Speaking about how he envisioned the plan, Iger stated, “When I saw Gen Z and Gen Alpha and even millennials, and I saw the amount of time they were spending in terms of their total media screen time on video games, it was stunning to me, equal to what they spend on TV and movies… And the conclusion I reached was we have to be there, and we have to be there as soon as we possibly can, in a very compelling way.” Surely enough, the $1.5 billion investment materialized and with it, the stocks of Disney saw a significant boost of 11%. 

Although the exact terms and conditions of the deal were not made public, a few pointers can be noted from a report published by Forbes. The report stated that in exchange for the money, Disney would demand a token stake of equity in the company. They also promised Epic Games about expanding and exploring digital worlds based on exclusive intellectual properties from Disney. 

With the deal now done, the next question is – Is the deal a smart move for Disney?

Disney & Epic Games: An intelligent move? 

The flagship product of Epic Games, Fortnite has over 70 million active users per month. What makes the game more appealing are the IPs that help users use skins as per their choice in the game. These skins range from rappers, sports entities, fictional characters, and even entities from the extended universes of Star Wars, Disney, and Marvel. 

However, with the new deal, the two companies can form a persistent metaverse where users can “play, watch, shop, and engage.” Although this might take some time to materialize, game maps are a possibility that would have a huge potential in the long term. 

Imagine users being able to play in a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean†map or a ‘Toy Story†map. The taste of success has already been there since Fortnite had a similar collaboration with Lego. Users flocked to the game to access the Lego map, which resulted in 2.4 million users playing the game in one month. 

However, the challenge Epic Games has faced is the constant loss of its active users with time. This is an area that can be bolstered with the latest collaboration. Bringing in exclusive Disney characters and maps periodically will keep the users intrigued and could thereby make this deal a win-win situation for both parties.

Many LIV Golfers have brought the spotlight upon themselves since the inception of the Saudi-backed league but this time, one of the defectors has found himself at the center for a completely different reason. Ian Poulter, a while back, shared a story on his social media handle about the game of Fortnite which drew a lot of attention from the golfing and the gaming community.

In the update on Instagram, the 47-year-old shared a video of his son, an avid gamer, playing the battle royale. Joshua James Poulter was spotted communicating with his teammates and asking them if they were ready in the video. He did so to make sure that the team was all set for being dropped off on the map.

Poulter was seen to be in surprise as he asked his son, “What are you playing dude?” To which Joshua mentioned the name of the title. The English professional shared the story with the caption “Boys will be boys… @fortnite.”

Fortnite breaks the all-time record for the concurrent player count

Recently, on August 25, 2023, Fortnite launched Chapter 4 of Season 4, called The Last Resort. In this chapter, Fortnite has broken the record for the most concurrent players.

In Chapter 4, as of now, this epic battle royale title has peaked at a concurrent player count of 2.81 million players on the third day of the ongoing season. The player count on the previous two days of season 4 was 2.43 million and 2.73 million, respectively. This breaks the previous record, which was set in season 3. The concurrent player counts for the first 3 days of season 3 were 1.94 million, 1.87 million, and 2.12 million, respectively.

Fortnite just reached a new concurrent players peak (2.81M) ever since players count went public in March, all thanks to the Season 4 launch.

Although this doesn’t take into consideration the stats from Chapter 1, Epic Games revealed the player count publicly in March. So, this is the first official benchmark from Fortnite. This staggering record would be much higher, as this benchmark doesn’t consider the creative mode. This metric is only based on the Zero Build Battle Royale and OG Battle Royale modes.

Why so many are jumping at Battle Royale Arean of this title?

So, what’s the reason behind this huge leap in this current chapter? The answer is in the chapter itself. Chapter 4 of Season 4 is exactly an upgraded version of the fan-favorite Chapter 2 of Season 2. It seems this chapter has brought twice the joy that Chapter 2 of Season 2 gave us. The heist theme of the ongoing chapter is taking players back to the golden era of Fortnite.

Both the chapters from different seasons, set apart by 3 years but connected with the newly introduced Kado Thorne’s Time Machine. So, players can dive into Chapter 2 of Season 2 of the game, dated way back on March 25, 2020.

The story doesn’t end here. The introduction of a brand new map, new items, and new weapons are big reasons for the high player count. Players have already started loving crazy items like the Rocket Ram, the Business Turrets, the Heist Bag, and many more. After that Switch owners would get to play that new Bayonetta spin-off announced by Nintendo recently. The game is called Bayonetta Origins, and the previews say that the game has a very similar feeling to Okami.

The biggest game that Nintendo is gearing up for is The Legend of Zelda Tears of the kingdom. The game would be launched in maybe 2023 and it can even be termed the biggest launch of 2023. As everyone knows, when a Zelda game launches there’s hardly a game that can compete with it.

As fans are super hyped for the above-mentioned games, there are rumors that a game that has been in development for a very long time might also see the light of day in 2023.

Yes, we are indeed talking about Metroid prime 4. The game’s development was started at retro studios back in 202, so we are hopeful it has progressed enough by now.
