Years After Becoming $80M Worth Hollywood Star, John Cena Left Big WWE Shoes to Fill, That Led Top Champion to Call It “Insanity”
WWE legends often set the scale too high for the upcoming generation to reach. Although it creates a lot of room for them to grow, it can also be problematic. John Cena is also one of those legends who created benchmarks; one after the other. Cena eventually kept WWE for his ‘occasional visits’ while he started a new career in Hollywood, making his net worth reach $80 Million. Even though the ‘wrestler’ became a ‘former wrestler’, he left a mark in the industry that was difficult to replicate.
All the wrestlers who came after Cena found it difficult to achieve stardom as big as his. In fact, the legend he created for himself caused the environment at WWE to be toxically competitive, as revealed by tag team champion Sami Zayn.

Zayn revealed that when he was developing his character in NXT, the mentality among WWE talents was to hate the company and get out of it. Moreover, there was toxic competitiveness among the stars. “Everyone around you is your enemy. They are all vying for your spot. This is a competition,” recalled Zayn what he used to hear. Talking in reference to the same era, he mentioned that wrestlers were also deemed useless if they were not aiming at achieving John Cena’s level of stardom.

Sami Zayn further added, “Let’s just say we’re in a room with 100 people. Let’s just say the next John Cena is in this room. There’s only one, so the other 99 people in this room should be miserable at all times, trying to aspire to be that person. What kind of insanity is that?” It’s important to note that the Canadian wrestler wasn’t calling out The Prototype with his statement. He only recalled Cena’s stardom, as it alone caused the environment at the workplace to be toxic.
Even to this day, Cena’s stardom in WWE hasn’t died. Before WrestleMania 39, Cena appeared to promote his match with Austin Theory. The promo alone threw them off their tracks and caused an internet-wide frenzy. The promo broke WWE’s records in history. This proved the power of Cena’s stardom, even after leaving wrestling long ago.
