Dominic Thiem Knocks Down Canada’s Denis Shapovalov at Montreal Open 2019

The Canadian, Denis Shapovalov faced the second seed of Montreal Open 2019, Dominic Thiem on his home soil, and in the battle of the one-handers, Thiem defeated Shapovalov 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in his opening round of Rogers Cup.

Set One:

The young contenders took off their round-of-32 encounter in a firm manner. The 20-year-old Canadian seemed rock-solid in the beginning and faced four break points until 3-3, and whereas Thiem could face none. Until 4-4, Shapovalov held a 100 percent first serve winning percentage and whereas Thiem was a little off the track with his serves. The one-hander Shapovalov was incessant with his returns as well.

However, a mistake gave rise to Dominic’s first break point of the match. Without any efforts, Thiem could convert the break point as Shapovalov double-faulted to give the Austrian a 5-4 lead in the first set and then flawlessly Thiem pulled off the set 6-4.

Set Two:

Their drill was followed in the second set, with Denis Shapovalov coming up with undaunted one-hand returns. While sprinting towards the net on Thiem’s serve, Denis happened to graze Montreal’s court and giving it a mark on one of the service boxes. 

World Number Four Broken!

Erroneous tennis from Thiem at 3-2, gave the Canadian youngster two break points. Without taking much time, he placed his return of serve on an unreturnable spot and then led 4-2.

Canada’s flag unfurled in the house as Denis Shapovalov led by 5-2 in the second set. Failing to return the robust serves by the Canadian, World Number five, Thiem had no other option another than moving to the decider.

Set Three: 

The Montreal courts have been slowed down this year, and it is probably favoring the clay-courters on the ATP Tour, but the young clay wizard, Thiem couldn’t outplay the Israel-born Shapovalov on his home court as Denis held his serve to love at 1-1 and also, his returns were peerless.

At 4-3, the first break point of the set emerged with a faulty service game by Shapovalov and then an overhead smash on the net gave Dominic Thiem a 5-3 lead in the final set.  Swiftly he closed out the match in the following game.

Thiem will face Marin Cilic tomorrow, who previously defeated John Millman in Montreal. And today’s win was the first win for Thiem on a Canadian court.
