Baldur’s Gate 3’s success is credited to tough choices, says the lead writer

Computer role-playing games are a niche genre; most do not even know they exist. But there are numerous games in this series that have stood out. But no matter how excellent those games were, none of them was able to reach the success that Baldur’s Gate 3 did. If this game’s lead writer, Adam Smith, is to be believed, this success is owed to a crucial decision the developers made early in the game’s development.

He claims that Larian’s decision to shift the game from isometric to third-person played a big part in its success. During a recent chat with Gamesradar, he claimed, “When I first joined during pre-production, it was a player talking to a character in full 3D models, obviously rough, but it was like, We’re doing this; we’re not isometric anymore. We’re going to bring the camera in close. And it’s a big gamble”.

He has explained that the biggest factor that made it a gamble was the expense that comes with a shift in perspective. A company that works with isometric camera angles starts making third-person RPGs, and they have to start worrying about motion-capturing dialogues and such.

Larian Studios also wanted to make sure that this shift in perspective did not mean that the game was not for their longtime fans. The developer had to make sure Baldur’s Gate 3 retained the feel of its predecessors; it’s a CRPG after all. So, everything from Divinity games came, including choices, open-ended quests, and a large world to explore.

But it looks like all this effort and expense actually paid off. The game is one of the most successful CRPGs ever made. Currently, it’s available for PC players to purchase. Eventually, Larian would release it for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles. Here’s hoping more developers take such risks just so gamers can have an abundance of awesome CRPGs.
