Ferrari has found itself in the middle of a championship battle against Red Bull this season. The Italian team is currently leading both the constructors’ world championship and drivers’ world championship courtesy of Charles Leclerc. But while Leclerc has thrived in the new 2022 car, his teammate Carlos Sainz has struggled to match his pace this season.
There have been a lot of questions if the Italian team should implement team orders in the coming races to prioritize the Monegasque driver over the Spanish driver this season. But Ferrari deputy team principal and Racing Director Laurent Mekies mentioned it is a bit too early to implement team orders.

Sainz has managed three podiums in the first 5 races of the season. But he has not been on pace with his teammate or world champion Max Verstappen as of yet. Mekies revealed that Sainz just needs to get a bit more comfortable in the car to showcase his true potential.
” No, I think it’s very early days for that. I think if you had a look at last year, points difference at the beginning of the season, you could have said the same thing. And in the end, things change. We are pushing a lot to make sure Carlos can adapt. Carlos can get more comfortable,” said Mekies.

“He has shown an extremely strong performance last year. We are convinced that he is going to develop a stronger performance in the very short term. So, there is… it’s Race Six of 22 races. Although you have to agree with Mekies that it is a bit too early to implement team orders for their cars, but if Carlos continues to be behind his teammate in terms of performance, then the situation might change.
The Italian team should be vigilant to implement team orders if they need to, otherwise, they might lose the championship to their rivals, Red Bull. The best possible alternative is that Sainz picks up his pace and challenges Leclerc and Verstappen for wins and pole positions.
