In 2019, Ferrari was subject to an investigation and was asked to comply with certain engine regulations, the effects of which were more than visible this season as Ferrari struggled all along.
Ferrari witnessed their worst season in the last 40 years. The team’s legacy took a significant hit as they fell out of the ‘Top-3’ and only managed a P6 finish. A consistent podium challenger failed to regularly qualify for Q3.
The Formula 1 community, the fans, and the team, everyone has been privy to the struggles of Ferrari. The team has a new driver line-up for the next season, with Carlos Sainz joining Charles Leclerc. The question is, how will the team recover from this season.

In that regard, team boss Mattia Binotto said, “The hope is to be back to being competitive. Maybe not the best – something which we are looking for for the future – but to be back to being competitive.”
“Third is not impossible, I think that should be our minimum objective for next season,” he added.
Ferrari looking forward to a new power unit in 2021
The primary reason for Ferrari’s issues is its power unit and their customer teams, Alfa Romeo and Haas, have also suffered because of it. A big effort will be needed to improve the engine package next season.
Binotto said, “In terms of performance, it progressed well – significantly compared to what it has been in 2020. Luckily enough, we can have a completely brand new power unit in 2021, otherwise we would have kept a performance disadvantage compared to the competitors.”

“Is it back to what was it 2019? I don’t think that should be the question. Where will we be compared to our competitors is more important because it’s all relative to the others,” feels Binotto.
“The technical directives have affected all of the manufacturers. I think that we will be back to being competitive as a power unit,” he further added.
Mattia believes that Ferrari will not be the worst team in the F1 field. However, he is not privy to the possible improvements of the other teams, if any.
