After the highs of Singapore, the Silver Arrows have hunched back into their usual form. At the 2023 Japanese GP today, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were technically in no-man’s-land as they lagged behind in pace. It’s time the reality sinks in: Mercedes has fallen. And it’s not as easy to get back up as you’d think. With the Bulls running away, even a miracle would do half the job to get them back into title contention soon.
Be that as it may, this ugly reality that the 7x champion has to deal with isn’t going to demoralize him. Even though he finished a solid 5th in the race today, he was a whopping 49 seconds off the pace of Max Verstappen. And with an insurmountable challenge before him, the 38-year-old chose to send a chilling message to all of his rivals and doubters.

We have some of the best engineers in the business and our accomplishments speak for themselves. We are beyond proof. We know how to be at the top and aren’t going to stop until we’re back there.”

Lewis Hamilton stands as a model of integrity in this cutthroat sport of ours. However, it would appear that his recent struggles have broken him down. As Mercedes sunk even further today at the Suzuka International Racing Course, the Brit urged his team to ditch playing by the rules.
Referring to McLaren and their meteoric rise in the 2nd half of 2023, Reuters quoted Hamilton as saying, “We can’t turn a blind eye to that. We’ve got to look at what they’ve done and go in that direction. That is the direction. But I truly believe my team can do it.”
