Sergio Perez Affirms Jeddah Being ‘The Most Dangerous Place’ On the F1 Calendar

The Saturday Qualifying in Jeddah was full of surprises and nail-biting moments. Like Lewis Hamilton getting knocked out in Q1 to Sergio Perez qualifying for his first pole in the qualifying session. But there were also some serious accidents like Nicholas Latifi’s accident to Mick Schumacher’s horrific crash. Even the qualifying leader, Sergio Perez, shared his thought on the Jeddah circuit.
The Jeddah Corniche Circuit became part of the F1 calendar last season when it hosted the inaugural Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. It is one of the most dangerous and tricky tracks as it features long straight and high-speed corners. The corners are the most dangerous part of the circuit; if a driver loses control for a bit he would end up in the wall. During the Saudi Qualifying, Schumacher spun and went straight into the wall when he was trying to get a faster lap.

Checo on the tricky Jeddah circuit
Checo did manage to be the fastest on this circuit without getting into any dangerous situation. Even after he qualified at the pole for the main race, the 32-year-old is still cautious about this tricky circuit. Checo said, “I think it’s definitely the most dangerous place in the calendar, that’s no secret about it. It’s a circuit that really demands a lot from the drivers, the cars and from the teams. If you get it wrong it can be a huge accident.”
I feel like I don’t know if there’s something we can do in 2022 and 23. Because those are really high-speed sections and it’s more about going into the race,” Perez continued.

“But I think it’s the same after qualifying, the last thing I want to think is about the track and I think going forwards it’s again a discussion that in all fairness they’ve done a good effort in a couple of months to change a bit of the circuit.”
Sergio Perez on his race pace in Jeddah
The 32-year-old Perez is one of the most experienced drivers on the grid. He has become an important part of Red Bull since he joined the team last year. He bagged many podiums in 2021, including his second race victory in Baku. Now Perez also got his first pole qualifying with Red Bull this season, which means that Checo will lead the Saudi Arabian GP.

The Ferrari duo was the favorite going into qualifying, but Perez outperformed them with his pace. The Mexican reported that his team focused on the quality and the race pace of the RB18 for the Jeddah race. Perez reported, “I mean we’ve been focusing more on race pace and quality. We felt that we’ve given away some quality performance to gain it in the race. But obviously, we’re gonna see tomorrow. I expect these two are going to be very strong. But I really hope that we can have a strong race tomorrow.”
