Max Verstappen faces hostility from fans yet again. After his win against Charles Leclerc at the French GP, many felt spiteful toward the Dutchman. Safe to say that Verstappen has got into a winning habit, just like a world champion should. But that is bound to bring unpopularity amongst fans.

Arguably, Leclerc could’ve won the race given Verstappen failed to catch up to him despite having an advantage on the straights. The Monegasque had a great start and managed a good gap ahead of Verstappen. In fact, this prompted Red Bull to change strategies, calling the Dutch driver early to the pits.

While this whole saga ended with Verstappen taking the win, it did not go down well with Leclerc’s second home crowd. The French booed the Dutch Lion while he was on stage. Ted Kravitz even reported, “Leclerc fans joined in booing at Verstappen when he was on stage.” To add salt to the wounds, they cheered on Hamilton frantically after he managed a hard-earned second place in the race.

“When Hamilton was on the podium, they just joined in cheering because he is not Verstappen. It seems like you can’t win, because wherever you go, you will be booed.” He further added. Funnily enough, Verstappen and Hamilton are known to be vicious rivals from last year. And surprisingly, seems like Leclerc fans have joined the seven-time world champion’s club to take a dislike towards Verstappen.

But why? Does winning earn you hate? Or maybe it’s because this has become a theme plaguing F1.

Not the first boo for Max Verstappen

This is not the first time Verstappen has received this kind of treatment, though. Silverstone is actually a place where Verstappen suffers more. The Dutchman is not well-liked amongst the British fans either. They are even more expressive with how they feel about the driver.

What does Verstappen have to say about it? “If they want to boo, they do it. I’m always happy to be here, it’s a great track, and a great atmosphere in general. Maybe some of them don’t like me, they’re all entitled to their own opinions. I don’t care.”
