Reaching the pinnacle of motorsport which only has 20 spots each year is a monumental task. However, reaching the top is one task, but staying at the top is completely different. Red Bull Racing’s activity in the driver’s market is reminiscent of the same.

The Milton Keynes-based outfit has become a racing powerhouse in recent years. Red Bull features the world’s best and often relies on sister team AlphaTauri for recruitment. Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen are perfect examples of the same. However, securing and keeping the AlphaTauri seat alone is a tremendous task.

Former F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari recently revealed the pressure of retaining the seat even at AlphaTauri. The Spaniard became the youngest ever driver to start a race while at Toro Rosso (now known as AlphaTauri). However, Alguersuari did not earn a promotion to Red Bull Racing and had to part ways with Toro Rosso as well, which caused him trauma.

“I went through a very complicated psychological and emotional moment, which made me a childish person,” he said.

“I’ll tell you one thing: I still dream, when I sleep, very strange dreams come to me, very strange from all that time.” (Translated using Google)

“Above all, from the impotence and frustration of never arriving, of seeing Mr. Marko always angry, beating me up. As if we were children. — This has created a trauma, and I am convinced that Buemi is experiencing it too, and many more. — I have done therapy. Now, even so, strange things come to mind.” he elaborated.

Alguersuari’s time at Toro Rosso ended after three years. In 2014, he moved to Formula E for a stint that did not last long either.

Safe to say, reaching and staying in the premier class is not a cakewalk.

Alguersuari’s claims might ring true for many former Red Bull drivers

The Spaniard’s claims might ring true for multiple drivers as the cutthroat nature of the sport can take a heavy toll. Recent examples would be Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon.

The Red Bull suit weighs heavy as both Toro Rosso graduates got the promotion, but neither could hold on to the seat. However, the high stakes and cutthroat nature of the sport does not allow for any driver to slip up for an extended period.

Sadly, that was the case with Jaime Alguersuari as he lost his seat and his opportunity to race in the premier class altogether.
