There is a very special guest accompanying Lewis Hamilton on the second row of the grid tomorrow. Daniel Ricciardo starts the Belgian Grand Prix in P4 – his best qualifying result with McLaren. As amazing as Ricciardo’s result was, he wasn’t the only surprise on the grid today. George Russell pushed his Williams to the front row, behind Max Verstappen.

It was a crazy qualifying session in Spa, to put it simply. Lando Norris’ unfortunate crash halted Q3 with eight minutes to go. When the rest of the cars made their way back to the track, the rain had stopped, but the track was still wet. Russell had proven to be the water bender this Saturday as he saw himself on top of the timesheets almost consistently.

Riding the Hungary high, Russell outperformed Lewis Hamilton and even held on to the provisional pole for a few seconds before Max set the fastest lap. Thrilled to make it to the front row, the Williams driver headed to parc ferme where Daniel Ricciardo congratulated him. He gave Russell a reason to go back and watch the race as he said, “I gave you some love on the radio!”

A sincere radio moment for Daniel Ricciardo

Before sending love to Russell, Ricciardo was in disbelief. With applause echoing in the background, Tom Stallard congratulates Ricciardo for P4. Instead of celebrating, Daniel hesitantly asks, “Is that finished?” Upon getting the confirmation, Daniel finally sighs a breath of relief.

Although the weather caused static in his radio, Ricciardo made one thing clear, “George deserves a public congrats.”

It has been a tough season for the Honey Badger, but today’s qualifying session only proved that no matter how hard it gets, Ricciardo will push forward. With the race only hours away, as he once said, “sometimes you just gotta lick the stamp and send it.” And fingers crossed, the Belgian GP will break his bad luck.
