LIV Golf’s inclusiveness in the Ryder Cup has been a topic of discussion for a very long period of time now. Many PGA pros and members of the golf fraternity have expressed their concerns about the Saudi League’s participation in the iconic Ryder Cup. And while a few pros are all for LIV players taking the course in Rome later this year, just as many are against them! Among those with an opinion about it are the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm!

And while the Spaniard stands on one end of the fence, his fellow European teammate, McIlroy, takes a seat opposite him with his strong views on the defectors’ participation, especially their ex-Ryder Cup teammate, Sergio Garcia, in the international event!

2023 has been quite a year for McIlroy. And certainly not his best! The Irishman has missed two PGA-designated events, for which he was fined $3 million. His performance at PGA events and major tournaments has also not been his best.

The Northern Irishman is getting ready to tee it up at Muirfield Village Golf Club for the Memorial Tournament. There, he was questioned about his take on the statements made by the likes of Rahm about LIV golfers being a part of the Ryder Cup. And perhaps unsurprisingly, his opinion was completely different from what the World No. 2 had said just a day before about his countryman Garcia not being a part of the European team.

“I have different feelings about the European team and the other side and sort of how that has all transpired, and, yeah, I don’t think any of those guys should be a part of the European team.” The world No. 3 was evidently still upset about how the LIV stars had resigned from the European Tour just weeks ago after being pushed into a corner. Surprisingly, his hostility was only towards his side of the international clash!

The golf pro’s take on the US team is entirely different from his own team’s. The 34-year-old said, I certainly think Brooks deserves to be on the United States team.” McIlroy praised Koepka and the performances he has shown in the past and showered him with his blessing to play in the Ryder Cup, saying that he didn’t feel any other LIV golfer had earned themselves that merit.

Of course, Rahm had exactly the opposite stance when it came to the international side. At the $20 million event in Ohio, he expressed his regret and sadness at not having Garcia by his side at the event. The 2020 Memorial Tournament winner stated that the Ryder Cup was about the best American golfers competing against the best European golfers, and as per him, that included his friend!

“Whatever is going on, who is playing LIV and who is not playing LIV to me shouldn’t matter,” said Rahm in his pre-tournament press conference. He claimed that it was disheartening to see how “politics” had found its place in such a “beautiful event.” The reigning Master Champion further added that he would certainly miss his fellow Spanish golfer while competing against the American elites.
