Rory McIlroy Reflects on Recent Struggles: “I’d Never Heard of Collin Morikawa, I’d Never Heard of Jon Rahm”

Rory McIlroy has an otherwise good record in golf if you don’t take his history with the Masters. He has four majors to his name but none of them are Masters.

McIlroy turned pro in 2007 and joined the PGA Tour in 2010. Since then, he has won 20 PGA Tour titles, including four major. Rory won the first major in 2011 with US Open. He continued the streak and won the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014 and the 2014 Open Championship.

However, since his 2014 PGA Championship, McIlroy hasn’t won a major. Although he has won the other majors at least once, his history with the Masters is not good. Despite participating in the Masters eight times, he hasn’t figured out the formula to win one.

The Irish golfer recently competed at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship; He finished at T12.

Rory McIlroy explained the reason for his inability to win another major!

In an interview, Rory revealed the reason for not winning a major in the last seven years. “I think I haven’t given myself enough chances,” he said.

McIlroy explained that he believes he can win another major if things are comfortable. If he has realistic chances of winning and a perfect putting position, a win at a major event is still achievable. However, that is not the big thing that worries the Irish golfer.

“I think players are getting better and better,” said McIlroy. According to the 32-year-old, the competition was lesser when he won his last major in 2014. “When I last won back in 2014, I’d never heard of Collin Morikawa. I’d never heard of Jon Rahm,” he added.

John Rahm and Collin Morikawa are the current world no. 1 and 2, respectively. He further added that there are too many good golfers now. While it was just four or five in the past, he has to compete with almost 140 potential winners at a tournament.

Although McIlroy hasn’t won a major in the last seven years, he has been winning other events. Rory has won the Players Championship, the 2019 World Golf Championship, the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship, and the 2021 CJ CUP @ SUMMIT.
