Ahead of this weekend’s German Grand Prix, Mercedes will run a special livery for the race. This is because the Silver Arrows will be celebrating 125 years in motorsport and a highly successful tenure.

The Hockenheim race will be Mercedes‘ 200th Grand Prix start in Formula 1. It will be extra special for the team as it is their home race as well. Mercedes have been utterly dominant so far this season and they may cap off their 125-year anniversary with another win.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that the team will commemorate the occasion with a special car design. However, they have teased fans with a glimpse of what the one-off livery will be.

He said: “This year’s race is a very special event: we’re the title sponsor of the Mercedes-Benz Großer Preis von Deutschland and the race will mark the 200th start for Mercedes in Formula 1.

“We will also celebrate a remarkable anniversary in Hockenheim: 125 years of motorsport.”

This milestone is significant as the very first car race was held in 1894 from Paris to Rouen. Incidentally, the winning machine was powered by an engine designed by Gottlieb Daimler. Daimler and Karl Benz would later found the company in 1926.

“It was the start of a great motorsport tradition that continues to this day and we are incredibly proud to write the next chapter in this legacy. We will run a commemorative livery to pay tribute to our heritage.”

Now, the German manufacturing giant will be making another stride in motorsport. This will be when they officially join electric racing series, Formula E after sending subsidiary team, HWA Racelabs.

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag even admitted, “Having a team for a year learning the ropes will make them hit the ground running when they start Season Six.”

HWA drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Gary Paffet even reported  that the car was reliable and “first impressions were very good.”
