Last weekend, the NASCAR paddock was at the North Wilkesboro Speedway. This was because the newly revamped iconic track was hosting the All-Star race. As it happens, this is NASCAR’s first visit to the speedway since 1996, when Jeff Gordon won the last race. So in the buildup to the weekend’s race, many of the drivers sat down to play a small game.

The participants included the likes of Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Bubba Wallace, Christopher Bell, and many more.

The theme of the game was for drivers to revisit the year, 1996.

During that year, the movie Space Jam was released in theaters, and it was pretty popular. It was NBA-themed and starred the legendary Michael Jordan in the lead role. In fact, it even got a sequel in 2021, starring LeBron James, though the reception was not as great, but that’s another story.

What Was Kyle Busch So Shocked About With Space Jam?

Coming back to the game, the drivers were shown various images of things that were popular in 1996. One of them was Space Jam, and a few drivers were pretty stumped. Harrison Burton briefly blanked on the movie’s name, even though he said that he watched it a lot.

Bubba Wallace got a little cheeky and joked that he recognized Bugs Bunny and Bill Murray, but ‘not the other guy’. Incidentally, the ‘other guy’ was none other than Michael Jordan, his own team’s boss.

When told, “Will you be surprised to know that people didn’t know that?” Wallace let out, “Are you f**king kidding me?”

Even, Kyle Busch exclaimed, “What! There was anybody that didn’t know Michael Jordan?”.

Unfortunately, he was correct, as Christopher Bell blanked out on the answer and had to be told afterward. Even Chase Elliott was a little bit clueless about the movie.

Busch and Wallace’s shock was actually very understandable because Space Jam is a classic movie.

What is the synopsis of Space Jam?

The movie follows Michael Jordan, who had just retired from the NBA. Then, he is inexplicably taken to the animated world of the Looney Tunes. In anime terms, this is effectively known as an ‘isekai’. Over there, he and the Looney Tunes have to team up in an epic basketball game against a group of aliens. The aliens had ‘stolen’ the talent of players like Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues.

So, Jordan had to team up with the Tunes and beat the alien monsters. The objective was to save the Looney Tunes from being abducted and return the talent from the players.
