Hailing from Michigan and stepping into the NASCAR arena in 2019, Carson Hocevar has had a meteoric rise, which is nothing short of remarkable. Within just 75 races of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, the young racer boasts three impressive wins and a whopping 32 top-10 finishes. But recently, while Carson, at the spry age of 20, was setting his sights on making a mark in the Xfinity Series and then slowly transitioning to the Cup Series, a shocker (more of a surprise) was thrown his way.

His Xfinity Series team, Spire Motorsports, dropped a bombshell: they wanted him to drive for them in a full-time role in the Cup Series starting the very next season! While this news delighted fans, it seemingly caught Carson off guard.

In a candid conversation with Skew Too reporters, he didn’t just share his initial astonishment but also spilled some behind-the-scenes details about the deal, shedding light on why the big announcement played the waiting game.

No one saw it coming, especially not when Carson Hocevar had only graced six races, but Spire Motorsports dropped a bombshell by picking him for the Cup Series. Digging into the backstory, Hocevar mentioned that the conversations began shortly after his Gateway race, where he ranked at P36. While this wasn’t the grandest debut, Spire Motorsports clearly recognized a spark in him.

Explaining the suspense about the late reveal, Carson stated, “It started all right after Gateway. It started early talks, trying to figure out how to really make it happen. I didn’t have it lined up. I wasn’t even sure if I was going to go Xfinity racing and just trying to figure out all the parts and pieces. And obviously, finally got together, and Spire is like, Hey! We have some stuff we have to button up our end, and I’m like, Oh, okay!”

He went on to provide a sneak peek into the massive expansion plans of the team: purchasing a charter worth $40 million, moving headquarters from Concord, N.C., to Mooresville, N.C., and more. With a laugh, he added, “That’s kind of weird, whatever; no big deal. So it kind of delayed my announcement of what I thought, and all of a sudden they’re buying buildings and race teams, and soon probably they are going to buy a country or something at this point. And I’m like, man! Okay! They had a little bit more of a button-up than I thought.”

Hocevar’s meteoric rise is nothing short of spectacular, both in the echelons of NASCAR and in the hearts of fans. A sentiment clearly shared when fans didn’t bat an eyelid, questioning Jimmie Johnson’s choice of Mike Rockenfeller for his swan song race of the 2023 Cup Series at Charlotte. For Hocevar, however, joining as a full-time NASCAR Cup series driver is nothing less than a dream come true.

Carson Hocevar is set to take the wheel of the No. 77 for Spire Motorsports, joining ranks with Corey LaJoie and Zane Smith for the 2024 Cup Series.

“I mean, anybody in my position wants to be a Cup Series driver,” shared an emotional Hocevar. “That’s what you dream about when you’re young. You want to race on Sundays. So, given my opportunity to run a few times this year—to run on Sunday and get ready—I feel more than prepared to get in the No. 77 car with Spire. That team is growing exponentially, and I’m just excited for everything.”

Fully aware of the weight of his new role, he added, “I know it seems like a big jump.” With hopes high, fans, spectators, and NASCAR analysts are banking on him to not just meet but exceed expectations and emerge as a robust contender for the 2024 championship.
