It’s official! We are about to witness David Ragan return to Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing in next year’s Daytona 500 as the team has announced they will enter a third car for the iconic race donning the number 60, which is equally historic for the Concord-based team.

Teasing the #Stage60 program, RFK Racing took to Twitter to share a video featuring David Ragan in the BuildSubmarines-Ford colors. The entrant is an open car which means it will battle it out for one of four open spots, with plans to also run the car in multiple races throughout the year.

David Ragan returns to RFK for the 2024 Daytona 500

Fans familiar with the No. 60 car will recall its heroics in the Xfinity Series in over 600 races being driven by drivers such as Chris Buescher and Mark Martin. On the other hand, it also marks a historic return for David Ragan to RFK Racing after 13 years. The Georgia native got his big break in NASCAR after Roush Fenway Racing gave him an opportunity in the Cup Series in 2006. His last appearance with the outfit was in 2011 after having driven the No. 6 Ford Mustang for Roush since 2007.

After 30 Cup Series appearances and a summer win at Daytona among his two victories, Ragan pairs up with the No. 60, which has won an impressive 94 Xfinity Series races and has entered over 600. Speaking on the iconic pairing of two pillars of RFK Racing’s success, Steve Newmark, its president, was quoted by Forbes, “The 60 car represents an opportunity for us to honor our past and look forward to the future of RFK Racing”

Speaking of which, it’s not just an opportunity for RFK Racing but also for David Ragan, who had missed out on the 2011 Daytona 500 win after he was black-flagged post-restart even though he had been in the lead prior to that. After the end of that season, Ragan and Roush parted ways. And a new door opened for him at Front Row Motorsports, his home for much of the remainder of his full-time Cup career. But his best came with the team presently known as RFK Racing.

Ragan shared just how important this reunion is for him, “I spent some of the best years of my career driving for Mr. Jack and the team at RFK. They really gave me my first opportunity in the sport.  and I have to thank BuildSubmarines.com for helping make this happen. We had a really strong run going in my last year at Roush at the 500, and hopefully we can go back and finish what we started.”

Almost three months before the 2024 Cup Series season opener, the Speedway revealed that all Daytona 500 grandstands as well as camping sites have been sold out. With the reigning champion, Ryan Blaney expecting to kick things off in fashion, the fans arriving in Florida will also be treated to David Ragan’s return to RFK Racing.

It comes as no surprise that the fanfare at Daytona just keeps getting better by the year. After all, the inaugural race itself kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout with Lee Petty and Johnny Beauchamp battling it out for a photo finish in 1959. Since then, Denny Hamlin‘s win by inches over Martin Truex Jr at the 2016 Daytona 500 topped all records with a 0.010-second difference, the closest margin in Daytona history!

Frank Kelleher, the Daytona International Speedway President, was blown away by the fans’ commitment to the 2024 Dayton 500, sharing that the ticket sales are a testament to the importance of this historic venue. Kelleher further elaborated in a NASCAR official release, “It’s anticipation that builds throughout the year and into the offseason, then all comes together for a week of pure entertainment, competition and this passionate feeling you don’t get anywhere else but The World Center of Racing. We can’t wait to have a full house of race fans for the NASCAR season opener.”
