Wrecks and Cup races are perhaps the two things that go hand in hand. Although it may be fatal in nature. For the fans, they are the most contentious, yet appealing, part of the weekend races. And rightly so, after an inert zero-point All-Stars-Race, the fans got to spectate a few such wrecks in the season’s most awaited race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The fans were in anticipation as to what awaited them in the Coca-Cola 600. Would they witness another victory from the defending champion Denny Hamlin or see him relinquish his crown to another fellow driver? And their prayers were answered in the most riveting manner.

The wreck occurred at Turn 4, just at the start-finish line at Lap 182, when Denny Hamlin shoved Chase Elliott to the outside wall. But what allegedly looked like an act of intentional retaliation, the #9 driver right-reared Denny Hamlin’s car and in the process, spun him out of the track.

This incident resulted in the exchange of some heated words between the drivers and also led Hamlin to request a suspension of Elliott for the next race. However, the 2020 Cup Series champion stated that it was an “unfortunate circumstance” and not a deliberate move.

However, not everybody seems to agree with Elliott’s explanation, including the Hall of Famer Tony Stewart. The co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, who was part of the FOX booth as a broadcaster for Monday’s race was heard sharing his opinions on the wreck when it occurred.

Stewart expressed, “[Retaliation] isn’t a great move when you’re trying to gain points and get yourself back in those playoffs.

It is true that Chase Elliott is in dire need of those extra points, in order to secure his berth for the playoffs. But if the contact was deliberate, as many seem to believe, it is surely not the wisest of decisions.

The speculations are running high and the governing boy is yet to arrive at a conclusion. However, several fans are condemning the whole incident. As FOX released the footage of the collision, netizens in the comment section wrote shared their opinions.

Chase should be parked for next week.”

The precedent has been set. Chase better be parked for a race.”

“Intentionally!”

While others wrote, “Don’t care if it’s Carl at Atlanta, Bubba at Vegas or Chase here. If it’s a purposeful hook on a superspeedway, it should be a one race vacation. You CAN’T do that.”

Before the next race approaches, the “Golden Boy” of NASCAR will have to face the demons of his act. However, it remains to be seen whether this incident makes a dent in the relationship between the two drivers or takes the worst shape of rivalry. It all depends on these two drivers and how they choose to approach it.
