Before Kyrie Irving’s trade to the Dallas Mavericks from the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Lakers were apparently the top suitors for the eight-time All-Star’s services. However, things did not go as planned for the Lakeshow, as Nets owner Joe Tsai had other plans for Irving’s destination. Though Irving and the Mavericks have yet to come to an agreement on a new contract, this would mean that the 2016 NBA champion will be a free agent this upcoming summer.

Despite Irving finding a new home with the Dallas Mavericks, fans were convinced that he will eventually come to Los Angeles after his contract ends. Although, that might be difficult to pull off on paper as money is becoming a huge issue.

Money is an issue for a LeBron James-Kyrie Irving reunion

As per ‘The Athletic’ reporter Jovan Buha, money is the only issue that is standing in the way of a Kyrie Irving-LeBron James reunion in Los Angeles. So, in order to make room for Irving, the Lakers will have to make some drastic moves.

The report states that the Lakers would need to renounce the free agent rights of D’Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura, decline Malik Beasley’s team option, and waive Jarred Vanderbilt and Mo Bamba to create cap space.

According to Jovan Buha, “Choosing Irving would essentially force the Lakers to punt on their trade deadline additions.” Basically, the Lakers would have to get rid of a number of assets just to bring Kyrie Irving on board.

Given the current situation the Lakers are in, their chances of making the playoffs will be detrimental to what the front office plans for the future of the team. And whether it would be a smart move to bring Irving to Los Angeles.

Should the Lakers’ front office consider this?

There is no doubt that LeBron James and Kyrie Irving have some of the best on-court chemistry on the floor. The way they took down the Golden State Warriors in 2016 after being down 3-1 is still talked about to this day.

But is it worth getting rid of a handful of players just to bring one All-Star on board? Father time is approaching LeBron James as each day passes and injuries have started to take a toll on the 38-year-old’s body.

And if the Lakers hope to be a playoff contender in the future, the team could use all the help they can get. Even if it means cutting losses and offering Irving a huge multi-year contract to attract him to the Los Angeles Lakers.
