Joe Biden’s administration has been under immense pressure to bring Griner back to home soil. The President met Cherelle Griner and Elizabeth Whelan, the sister of another US prisoner in Russia, Paul Whelan. He provided both much-needed optimism and outlined his continued commitment to bringing them back.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed that the US has made a “substantial” prisoner exchange offer to Russia. They allegedly proposed to trade Griner and Whelan for Victor Bout, a Russian arms dealer.
