Robert Horry is the embodiment of a great role-player with his achievements, most notable of which are the 7 NBA championships he won throughout his career. But despite having one more championship than what the great Michael Jordan has, Horry’s achievements are often sidelined. Why is that?

Recently, the NBA veteran spoke about the disrespect that he gets despite winning 7 rings, apparently because he was a role player and not someone who carried the team. He said, “They’re always gonna have that asterisk on the side. Like, me, John Salley, like oh he played with Michael Jordan, oh he played with Shaq and Kobe, oh he played with Tim and Manu. So you have these asterisks, not knowing that them motherf***ers needed me.”

Horry set the record straight on his podcast, claiming that as much as Shaquille O’Neal and the late, great Kobe Bryant did for their team, he was there too, providing the necessary support. The 7x NBA champion also highlighted the fact that his championship rings have come with him playing for different teams.

His first 2 championships were with the Houston Rockets, the next 3 with the Los Angeles Lakers when they three-peated, and the last 2 came during his time with the San Antonio Spurs.

The trophies followed Robert Horry

The 53-year-old seems to have had enough of this narrative that his championships were not earned, and rightfully so. Horry has never claimed that he carried teams to the ultimate glory and has always maintained that he was a role player who was very good at what was expected of him. However, that doesn’t stop the naysayers from discrediting his contributions to those teams and the seven successful championship runs. He said, “You have to win multiple”, in order to make the claim that your championship is not a fluke.

In Horry’s case, he has seven, which makes a great case for him actually earning those accolades. The NBA veteran detailed his recent experience in Boston. He said that he was shocked by the reception he got there from fans. Horry concluded that the fans are always going to respect the players who have won titles the right way and the love he received recently in Boston proves, at least to him, that his championship runs are respected by the fans.
