Despite the unprecedented hype, Victor Wembanyama already has his doubters. But, among them, none are as high profile as Shaquille O’Neal. Whether it be on NBA on TNT, or even at the commentary desk, the big man isn’t aboard the Wemby train yet. After comparing him to Bol Bol earlier in the year, O’Neal still isn’t sold on the San Antonio Spurs rookie.

While his career is off to a tremendous start, especially for a rookie, Wembanyama still has ways to go. But, for Shaq, the current output isn’t enough. His anti-Wemby bandwagon marches on, full steam ahead. This time around, however, it is his own career that he’s taking as an example.

During his duty on the commentary desk, a monstrous Bam Adebayo dunk had Reggie Miller remembering the rookie days of the 7-footer. “Now, I used to see someone in Orlando [Magic] do this against my [Indiana] Pacers – a young Shaquille O’Neal.”

Because it wasn’t just the highlight reel dunks that made the Los Angeles Lakers legend such a tough cover. “Taking the ball coast-to-coast here. There’s the contact, how about the finish by Bam here?” The 4-time NBA Champion was in full agreement about his own bravado and talents.

Great move, great finish. And yes Reg, I was the first big guy to bring the ball up the court. Not Wemby, not Bol Bol. But, me. Me.” 

While he continues to express his disappointment with Wembanyama, can the Frenchman win over the legend?

Earlier in the year, the Miami Heat legend’s comments comparing Victor to Bol Bol were the source of controversy.

However, as the season has gone on, Wemby has shown his skill and talents. While still far from a finished product, the teenager’s raw skill and potential do make him a can’t-miss prospect. Of course, that skill isn’t translating to wins yet.

While common for rookies, that is the only legitimate gripe that the big man can have against the young sensation. Currently, at 3-14, the Spurs have been among the worst teams in the league.
