The Chargers got rid of HC Brandon Staley weeks ago, but the Rams‘ effect is still visible in the franchise. To get completely rid of it, the team cut off defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day from the roster on Friday. The DT was a member of the Super Bowl-winning Rams’ side and followed Staley to the Chargers. But why are we calling it the ‘Rams effect’?
The ex-head coach was formerly the defensive coordinator for the Rams, under whom they became the league’s best defensive side. When the Chargers approached Staley, he brought in a few of his favorites from the side that would later go on to win the Super Bowl LVI. But the plan did not work out, and the Chargers now face the need for a house cleaning spree.

The failure of the Chargers’ SB ambition surrounding Brandon Staley
Brandon Staley rose to fame after his successful stint with the Rams. Joseph-Day was one of his trainees who would eventually win the Super Bowl LVI with the side. Staley made no mistake in snatching the 6’4″, 295 lbs DT to his new side, hoping the glory would be recreated. But at this point, everyone knows how that turned out. And the DT saw his contract terminated on Friday, weeks after the franchise fired Staley.

Joseph-Day had 1 year remaining in his three-year, 16.5 million contract, which he signed in March 2022. But his premature departure doesn’t signal the end of the cleaning spree at the Chargers. Some veteran names, in particular, face uncertain futures as the team continues its 2024 rebuild.
Staley mistake pushes the team for a roster rebuild
The Dean Spanos-led ownership group has been often criticized for not spending, or being unable to spend huge amounts to keep up with the rest of the league. NFL insider Adam Schefter found out that the side had Sean Payton on their radar, but chose to go with Staley’s modest $4 million offer compared to the former’s $18 million, likely because of the salary cap hit.

And the move has fired back expectedly. Staley’s inexperience in HC jobs has led the Chargers toward an uncertain future, and the uncertainty is reflected in some of the players’ futures as well. Veterans like Keenan Allen, Joey Bosa, and Khalil Mack are clueless about their future, and the Joseph-Day fate can land on either of them on any given day.
