Three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes has his name on every NFL fan’s lips after his stellar performance in the game against the 49ers. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has proved himself over and over again and has even drawn comparisons to the veteran Tom Brady after the championship.

Coming from a sports background, the 28-year-old had achieved impressive statistics since his college days. Although he is a fan favorite, not everyone might know that after getting drafted in the first order by the Chiefs, Mahomes decided to give his all to football instead of completing his college degree!

Mahomes went to Texas Tech University in 2014, where he began exploring baseball and football. His interest in baseball came from his father, Pat Mahomes Sr., who was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. Following his father’s footsteps and getting counsel from MLB legends like Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, it seemed as if a baseball career was fit for the junior Mahomes.

The quarterback tried college baseball and even got drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round in 2014. However, it was Randi Martin who suggested that the QB try the field of football once. Chiefs fans must thank Mahomes; mother for convincing him to choose football over baseball. While playing football in high school, he caught the eye of a Texas Tech representative, leading to him getting committed to the university.

Therefore, the QB didn’t pursue baseball further, focusing fully on football, leaving even his college education aside. In 2015, Mahomes was quoted as saying, “Moving forward, after speaking with my family…I feel it is in my best interest to concentrate solely on football and academics this spring.”

Breaking records right from college!

Mahomes started as quarterback under head coach Kliff Kingsbury, and by 2016, he had set the record in the NCAA for most single-game yards passing and most single-game yards total offense. He represented Texas Tech as a quarterback in the Red Raiders. He wasn’t behind in academics either. Pursuing marketing, Mahomes was recognized as the Football Scholar-Athelete of the Year by the Big 12 Conference.

Soon, he achieved the top position in several statistics through the USA, including touchdowns, points responsible, passing yards, total offense, and yards per game. So it didn’t come as a surprise when Mahomes entered the NFL draft in 2017, forgoing his senior year of college. Soon enough, the three-time MVP was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round, and the rest is history.

As a rookie, Mahomes was the backup to Alex Smith and didn’t get much chance to play. He finally got the time to shine when Smith was traded to Washington Redskins before the 2018 season. Soon, he proved true to his record and stunned everyone with his performance, becoming the second player to score at least 50 touchdowns in one season. Though the Chiefs failed to make it to the Super Bowl, the 23-year-old Mahomes secured the league’s MVP title.

Mahomes has come a long way from his college football days. With three Super Bowl wins under his belt and having won the SB MVP title as many times, the Chiefs strongman has cemented his position in the NFL and awed fans and critics alike with his magical performance.
