For the first time in two decades, Bill Belichick’s future in the NFL looks uncertain. It’s hard to believe that he is the same coach often touted as the ‘most successful coach in NFL history’ with 6 Super Bowl Championships under his belt. But now with a 2-10 score, the dynasty is far from what it used to be.

So, how badly are the New England Patriots doing this year and how much of it can be blamed on HC Belichick? Is there any chance of redemption for the 71-year-old coach, who also stands a few games away from breaking Don Shula’s record of the coach with the most number of wins?

The Patriots are currently the worst team in the entire league in terms of offense. According to stats compiled by the NFL, they are the lowest-scoring team through 12 games since the Los Angeles Rams in 2011. For the first time in the franchise’s history, they have been completely dominated by their opponents who didn’t even let them score a single point for 2 games at home.

They are also the only team since 1938, to lose 3 back-to-back games with 10 points or less. On Thursday, they will try to break this streak in the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Incidentally, the Steelers and the Patriots both hold the record for the most number of Super Bowl wins at 6. But in the current season, the Steelers are at 7-5, while the Pats are at 2-10.

In a season that saw the firing of two head coaches, is Belichick up next? Mike Florio and Chris Simms, speaking on NBC’s PFT Liveargued that he has “earned the right” to finish the season. Mike Florio said that Robert Kraft is “holding out hope that they’ll be able to get value for Bill Belichick from whatever team ends up wanting to employ him and that he wants to be employed by”.

There have only been 8 head coach trades in the league’s history. Could Belichick’s move from the Patriots be the 9th? He himself had come to New England in a trade with the New York Jets for a 1st round pick. According to Florio, the Krafts will wait till the end of this season to decide whether to trade him or not. But he also left open the possibility that if Thursday Night Football goes badly for the Patriots, the team may decide to hand over the reins to inside linebackers coach, Jerod Mayo.

I am a hardcore believer in the ?Mamba Mentality?, which certainly applies to the NFL. The sport is not just about physical prowess but also demands a powerful mindset. Growing up, I spent time with athletes on the neighborhood soccer field.
