Essentials Inside The Story
- Pete Carroll’s first year in Las Vegas ends with another reset.
- The Raiders now face a costly contract decision tied to Carroll’s deal.
- Mark Davis, John Spytek, and Tom Brady shape what comes next.
Pete Carroll has officially joined the list. First, it was the Special Teams coordinator, Tom McMahon. Then it was the offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. And now, following what turned into one of the worst seasons in Las Vegas Raiders history, the franchise has fired Carroll just one year after bringing him in as head coach.

The decision was announced Monday, shortly after the Raiders closed out their season with a win over the Kansas City Chiefs, confirming Carroll would not return in 2026. And with Las Vegas now heading into the offseason facing another coaching vacancy, it’s worth taking a closer look at Carroll’s contract, his salary, the financial implications of the move, and exactly how much the Raiders still owe him.

Pete Carroll’s contract details with the Raiders
Pete Carroll is one of just three coaches to win both an NCAA national title and a Super Bowl. And without any doubt, it was one of the major reasons the Raiders targeted him after his long, successful run with the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2023. Las Vegas reached a three-year agreement with Carroll in January 2025 to make him the franchise’s next head coach.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the deal also included an option for a fourth year. After signing, Carroll spoke confidently about building a winning culture in Vegas right away. But with the Raiders now holding the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, it’s clear the 2025 season ended with the league’s worst record, 3-14, far from the immediate turnaround Carroll envisioned.

How much is Pete Carroll’s salary? How much do the Raiders owe him?
For now, the exact details of Pete Carroll’s salary with the Raiders remain unclear, largely because NFL teams don’t publicly disclose contract terms for head coaches or front-office staff. That said, The Sun reported that Carroll signed a three-year, $45 million deal in 2025. If that figure is accurate, and with the Raiders deciding to move on after one season, the franchise would reportedly owe Carroll roughly $30 million.

Now, with Carroll officially out of Las Vegas, the Raiders are once again searching for leadership. This time, it’ll be the fourth head coach in four seasons and their fifth permanent head coach since relocating to Las Vegas in 2020. Naturally, that raises the next question: Who’s next? Owner Mark Davis has already clarified how the search will be handled. Per Davis, GM John Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady will work closely together in identifying the next head coach.

“Together, they will guide football decisions with a shared focus on leadership, culture, and alignment with the organization’s long-term vision and goals,” Davis said.
For now, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Raiders lean toward an offensive-minded head coach if they choose to draft a rookie QB. The Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars took that route in 2025 with Ben Johnson and Liam Coen, respectively. And both teams ended up in the playoffs. As for Las Vegas, that answer will come soon enough, with Carroll becoming the latest head coach dismissed just a day after the regular-season finale.
