The A-team has been assembled. As soon as Jim Harbaugh joined the Chargers, his vision was set on nit-picking only the best coaches across the football landscape to create his new team. He leveraged the responsibility to lure in the best candidates to assume the vacant roles at the Chargers. However, the move might also prove to be a massive sabotage to the candidates’ former teams.

ESPN’s Bruce Feldman’s opinion ignited a huge expectation from Harbaugh to bring Michigan’s X-factor, their strength and conditioning coach, Ben Herbert, on board with him. While several reports claimed that it would be highly unlikely for Herbert to leave Michigan because of his lucrative $1 million pay at Michigan, Harbaugh turned it into reality. As a result, Herbert is set to bid adieu to his 6-year-long companionship with Ann Arbor to join the So-Fi stadium, assuming the same position, per The Detroit Press.

Along with Herbert, another key staff member is all set to join the team. Two candidates, Giants Assistant General Manager Brandon Brown and Ravens Director of Player Personnel Joe Hortiz, were the leading prospects, as both were called for a second interview. However, following the second round of questions, the Chargers seem to have made up their mind on Joe Hortiz as he, too, would be assuming his role as the general manager of the Chargers. Hortiz has been with the Ravens since 1998 and was promoted to the position of director of player personnel in 2019.

While the aftermath of this on the relationship of Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and Jim Harbaugh remains a mystery to be solved, it sure would be a massive add-on to Harbaugh’s strong-looking staff. On the other hand, the Ravens are yet to make any announcements regarding Hotriz’s replacements, but Michigan has already picked someone to fill Herbert’s shoes.

Before and after Ben Herbert

Speaking of Herbert, he has worked in Michigan since 2018, after completing his five years at Arkansas. Among these, his most significant season was 2023, where he was credited with setting the team’s ‘one track mindset’, making the players robust enough to face NFL players. He aided Michigan in raking in an undefeated season, along with a National Championship almost after a quarter, also earning him the promotion to the assistant head coach’s position. During the blazing 2023 season, he trained 95 NFL draft selections, 12 first-round picks, and 3 Heisman Trophy finalists like JJ McCarthy and Blake Corum.

By now, Michigan is ready with replacements, as they were quick to announce Justin Tress will be Herbert’s replacement. Tress has worked as a staff member for the former strength and conditioning coach for the past six seasons. He, along with Sherrone Moore, the new head coach of Michigan, would be taking over the reins of the Wolverines.
