The NFL players abide by some interesting rules as players. And some of these rules also involve how the players are expected to make decisions in terms of their endorsements. There are specific rules that have been set in place so that inspirational NFL athletes don’t promote beverages like beer that are seen as unhealthy. However, a lot of NFL athletes have gone on to find loopholes in this rule against branding and promotion and one of them is Patrick Mahomes.
Very recently, Mahomes took part in a commercial for Coors Light. However, he was able to exploit the loophole into a very prominent NFL rule. However, another beer company, albeit a controversial one, has announced its intentions to partner up with prominent players from the league to advertise their products. Is Bud Light doubling down with the NFL?
The NFL has a very staunch rule that any player is not allowed to appear in any commercials that involve drinking beer or directly endorsing a beer. Despite such a clear-cut rule for alcoholic beverages, Bud Light seems to have found a workaround and is planning on using the NFL for its advertising. As popular media has seen in the past few months, Bud Light got sucked into a very controversial narrative.
However, they seem to be eager to pull themselves out of it. As per Forbes, the VP of Bud Light mentioned that the company is ready to move in a new direction for beer. They are pouring money into their advertising, which will include collaborations with country music and NFL stars.
The beer company has mentioned that it will be partnering up with stars like Travis Kelce, Dak Prescott, and George Kittle for commercials that will air during primetime broadcast TV, cable, and sports programming. Interestingly, two of the NFL’s bigger stars, Peyton Manning and Patrick Mahomes sparked a slight controversy through their recent actions. Interestingly, their actions involved beers like Bud Light and one of its competitors.

Patrick Mahomes, Peyton Manning, and the accursed drink of beer
As an active NFL player, Mahomes will come under the jurisdiction of the NFL rule that prevents him from endorsing beer. However, he still participated in the ad for Coors Light Beer in a very creative manner. He was able to endorse Coors Light through a cleverly crafted advert that did not actually mention beer, but ‘bear’. He was able to employ an interesting loophole throughout the advertisement and even made signals like concealing the ‘bear’ with a paper bag.

Interestingly, in the case of Peyton Manning, it was slightly different. The retired QB was seen at the College World Series game on the weekend. He was captured drinking a Bud Light beer and this caused mayhem among fans. They were absolutely outraged that Manning was still fine with drinking a Bud Light, given the kind of controversy that has surrounded it.

All in all, both stars faced some judgment for their choice of beverage as well as their ways of showing off their preference. However, the controversy over Bud Light still remains very prominent. It only remains to be seen how the NFL fanbase will perceive the latest proposed collaboration Bud Light is planning with NFL players.
