The Green Bay Packers have finally let go of their veteran QB Aaron Rodgers in the highly anticipated trade with the New York Jets. By trading their 4X NFL MVP QB, the team saves $10 million in the salary cap. But on the downside, they now have a $40 million dead cap penalty because of his premature departure.

But it does not stop the Packers from negotiating a deal with their next QB in line, Jordan Love. According to the latest reports, the dead cap situation has not deterred the franchise from securing the future of their next-generation QB financially. So how did the Packers manage it?

Less guaranteed money for the new Packers QB?

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Packers have agreed to a new deal with Jordan Love through 2024 ahead of the fifth-year option deadline. This means that the Packers decided not to take up Love’s fifth-year option. The fifth-year option would have meant $20.272 million in guaranteed money.

However, the franchise instead decided to sign a one-year extension with Love. It includes $13.5 million in guaranteed money and can go up to around $22.5 million. While the extension means Love will get less guaranteed money, it still has its additional benefits for the QB in the franchise.

The move comes as a result of the team putting their faith in Love to carry on the baton after Rodgers’s exit from the franchise. 

Jordan Love has some serious shoes to fill

The Packers drafted Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 draft. His drafting also set the momentum swinging in Green Bay and the potential shift in QB duties for the post-Rodgers era. With the franchise putting their faith in Love after monitoring his developments all offseason, they feel confident in him becoming the next franchise QB for the team. The Packers also spent the 2023 draft loading up with pass catchers to play with. They selected 3 WRs (Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Grant DuBose) and two TEs (Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft) in total from the 2023 draft. 

It will be a fresh new offensive look for the Packers for the first time since 1992. And after the new contract is in place, the fans, as well as the team, will be expecting great things to come from the 24-year-old.
