Jake Guentzel’s College and Professional Career

Before turning pro, Jake Guentzel played three standout seasons at the University of Nebraska Omaha (2013–2016). He was a prolific playmaker for the Mavericks, tallying 119 points in 108 games and leading the program to its first-ever Frozen Four appearance in 2015. 

His collegiate success followed a dominant stint with the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors, solidifying his status as a high-upside prospect for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who drafted him 77th overall in 2013.

Guentzel’s professional career began with one of the greatest rookie playoff runs in NHL history. After debuting in late 2016, he exploded in the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs, leading all scorers with 13 goals as the Penguins captured the championship. He quickly evolved into an elite first-line winger, recording two 40-goal seasons and becoming a perennial point-per-game threat alongside Sidney Crosby. 

After eight seasons in Pittsburgh, Guentzel was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2024 deadline, where he maintained his scoring pace through the postseason.
