In the matter of life and death, they say one seeks the best possible outcome. But what if the fate of life lies in the hands of someone else? Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is ready to wager his life on a penalty taken by none other than his ex-teammate and club icon, Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that he is ‘one of the best players to ever play football.’

The fullback sat down for a brief interview with Sky Sports, where he was asked which player he would trust to take the penalty kick in order to save his life. Despite knowing that the ability to convert from the spot is a 50-50 chance, he took 4 names that included Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Harry Kane. When asked to name one, he said CR7 and stated, “100%. His record speaks for itself. What he’s done over football in the last 15 years is incredible.”

Shaw shared the locker room with Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese superstar made an emphatic return to Old Trafford in 2021 from Juventus. “One of the best players to ever play football and for me, it was a real honour to be able to experience first-hand playing with him, to see how he lives his life and to see what he does to stay at that top level. It was an unbelievable feeling to see him day in and day out,” he concluded. While the penalty kick narrative was indeed a bold claim by the 28-year-old, there was a twist.

In 2013, Luke Shaw boldly asserted that his ex-teammate Cristiano Ronaldo had consistently lived in the shadow of his long-standing rival, Lionel Messi. His first tweet said, “Not really a Ronaldo fan but fair play to him tonight, always been in Messi shadow, but the way he is playing at the moment is unstoppable.” In another tweet, a netizen questioned, “What can he do that Ronaldo can’t?” To which he replied, ” [Messi] scored 91 goals in a year. Has Ronaldo done that?” Wait, it doesn’t end here!

During the 2012 UEFA Euro, Ronaldo scored a brace in Portugal’s 2-1 win against the Netherlands in the group stage. Shaw’s then Southampton teammate Jamal Branker tweeted, “Ronaldo is taking the p*** out of Holland,” and asked if Shaw, Will Britt, Omar Rowe, and James Ward-Prowse were watching the match. Surprisingly, Shaw replied, “Look at you begging of him cause he has had one good game. Messi does it all the time! Now shh #TeamMessi.”

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
