In 2021, a Joan Laporta-led delegation failed to renew the contract of the Argentinian. The president stated that considering the financial difficulties of the club, it was the best decision for all parties involved. However, Lionel Messi was reportedly furious with how the negotiations went. He did not have any intentions to leave the La Liga club before the end of his playing career.

Years later, his frustration with President Laporta was quite visible in the 2023 Ballon d’Or ceremony. Lionel Messi snubbed him after he requested a picture. This is the biggest issue at the moment. It also indicates that the soccer veteran did feel hard done after abruptly leaving his beloved club after 20 years of sheer hard work and winning trophies every season.
